Sawing precast concrete with large blades requires adherence to specific best practices to ensure precision, safety, and blade longevity. The following guidelines provide essential steps for effective sawing operations with these blade sizes.

1. Optimal Operating Speeds

Operating the saw at the correct speed is crucial for efficient cutting and blade preservation. The recommended speeds are as follows:

• 36-inch Blade: 1140 RPM

• 40-inch Blade: 1020 RPM

• 48-inch Blade: 850 RPM

2. Break-In Period

A proper break-in period is essential for new blades. Aim for approximately 400 lineal feet, maintaining an amperage between 50-60. This process ensures the blade is conditioned for extended use.

3. Timing of Cutting

Perform cutting operations on the same day, preferably within 12 hours, while the concrete is still in a green state. This timing facilitates smoother cuts and reduces blade wear.

4. Use of Water

Always apply water to both sides of the blade during cutting, adhering to the recommended PSI for the saw. Water acts as a coolant, minimizing heat buildup and prolonging blade life.

5. Step Cutting Technique

Implement step cutting to enhance cut quality and limit blade stress. This method involves making multiple shallow passes rather than a single deep cut, leading to better outcomes and extended blade life.

6. Avoid Full Depth Cutting

Refrain from full depth cutting as it increases blade stress, friction, and heat, potentially causing premature wear or blade failure.

7. Prevent Blade Jams

Blade jams occur when removing too much material too quickly. Such jams can result in segment loss and loss of blade tension. To prevent this, control the cutting speed and material removal rate.

8. Recommended Cutting Depth

For optimal results, divide the total thickness by two. For instance, with a 12-inch thick precast concrete piece, perform two passes of 6 inches each—one downcutting and one upcutting.
