Fueling your saw: Mixing Oil and Gas

If you want your saw to run longer, perform better, and function properly, it is critical to operate your saw with the proper fuel. This means understanding the proportions when mixing oil and gas together. Too much oil can cause carbon build-up on your spark arrestor. Not enough oil can lead to scoring on the piston and cylinder and cause damage to the saw's bearings. With proper usage of fuel and maintaining good saw practices, your saw won't be the only one happy, but so will you!

1-gallon gas can, Synthetic 2-cycle engine oil, 89+ octane gas with no more than 10% ethanol, and Gloves.

It is good practice to understand how to properly mix oil and gas in order to maintain your saw's performance over a long period of time. Proper fuel usage can help avoid expensive repairs and unnecessarily damaged equipment. All Stihl gasoline-powered equipment runs on a 50:1 mixture of gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil. To begin mixing fuel, here are some of the essential items you will need to start (For this example, we'll assume a 1-gallon container is used):

There are three simple steps to follow when mixing fuel:

  1. Pour 2.6 fl oz. oil in the 1-gallon container
  2. Fill 1-gallon container with gas to the 1-gallon line
  3. Attach the lid and shake the container by hand to ensure proper mixing of oil and gasoline

Some additional tips to take notice of are:

  • Use 89+ octane fuel with low or no ethanol added
  • Only mix enough for a few days of work
  • Do not exceed 30 days of storage
  • Ensure proper mixing procedures based on your gas can's capacity

*Always use all of your remaining fuel in your saw before you refill again. This helps avoid issues of uneven mixtures and oil settling at the bottom of your saw.

We recommend using STIHL High-Performance Ultra 2-cycle engine oil for the best results with your gasoline-powered cut-off machine.
