Best Practices for Metabo Grinder Maintenance

As grinders are used in a tuckpointing, or grinding application the effects of a dusty environment may hinder the performance and longevity of your high quality Metabo angle grinder. Metabo is the industry standard in quality and they are constantly making improvements to stay the leader in the angle grinder industry. Even with the constant improvements that are made with each new series of tool, some issues may still be present.

Issues that may arise are:  sticking switch slides, premature wearing of the carbon brushes, premature wearing of the armature windings, and overloading of the tool due to high concentrations of dust.

Below are some directives that will help you in achieving the max service life of your Metabo grinder.
☑ Remove back cover of tool (3 torx # 25 screws) Using compressed air, blow out tool completely at intervals of every couple of hours.

☑ If an on/off switch button is stuck, unplug grinder from the power source. Remove the 3 torx screws on back cover (T25), remove one torx screw (T20) on cord support, and remove back cover (black in color) Free switch slide, and blow out with compressed air. Reassemble in the reverse order, ensuring proper routing of power cord cable within the tool.

☑ When available, use tuckpointing guards in tuckpointing applications, or dust shrouds in cup grinding applications.

☑ Ensure that the proper gauge extension cord is being used. A typical 50 foot cord should be running a minimum of 10 gauge cord.

☑ Small gauge cords run at a long length will lose power over the length of the run, causing the tool to overload and heat up.

☑ Ensure that the proper power source is being supplied to the grinder. Example, running two grinders on a 2000 watt generator.

☑ Ensure there aren’t any cuts in the power cord or sheath causing a loss in power to the grinder.

☑ When finished with a cut, before shutting the tool off and setting down, under no load, let the grinder run for 15-20 seconds allowing fresh air to circulate through the tool and cool off the armature (motor).

☑ When implementing these few minor methods, you will prolong the life of your Metabo tool and have many more problem free hours of work.
